Cambridge Science Festival
Saturday, April 13th, 2013 from 12-4pm
Cambridge Public Library, 449 Broadway, Cambridge, MA.

We were thrilled to bring Lattice Work to the 7th annual Cambridge Science Festival in Cambridge, MA, as part of the Festival’s Science Carnival, an all ages science activity extravaganza with 50+ different activities and performances happening simultaneously! There were so many cool activities to see, learn & do!

Cambridge Science Festival!

The Cambridge Science Festival is an annual celebration
showcasing the leading edge in science, technology, engineering, art, and
math. A multifaceted, multicultural event every spring, the CSF makes science
accessible, interactive and fun!

Ten days and nights of events during public school vacation week means
there’s something for everyone. Check out the Robot Zoo at our Family Science
Carnival; “Party for the Planet” at the Franklin Park Zoo on Earth Day; tour
bridges spanning from Cambridge to Boston (and wear comfortable shoes!);
laugh along with us as comedians try to guess what experts are researching in
some of the more obscure scientific fields.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum – October 2012 – Boston, MA

Lattice Work @ After Hours

In October we had the great pleasure of bringing LATTICE WORK to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum for their fun nighttime monthly, Gardner After Hours. The event theme was Arches and Light; highlighting the Gardner’s new wing designed by architect Renzo Piano. LATTICE WORK took place in a new Education Studio, which was a perfect large, high-ceilinged workshop space! Many thanks to Kate Bullen & Julia Ham at ISGM and to the many enthusiastic participants who joined us!

Communikey Festival 2012 – Boulder, CO

Maya & Mitch

Maya & Mitch at CMKY 2012

In April, LATTICE WORK was in Boulder, CO for the Communikey Festival of Electronic Music and Art (CMKY). We had been to CMKY before and lived in Colorado, so being back was a bit of a homecoming for us and felt super cozy to be building LW in such a warm and friendly environment with so many friends (new and old). Paper was generously donated from the University of Colorado at Boulder’s recycling center; an estimated 6000 sheets were used + 30 rolls of tape.

Maybe it was just the nature of using paper from a university, but it seemed like we were seeing / using a lot of thesis paper drafts and final papers. I for one, felt smarter just skimming random sentences and titles on various topics; geology, math, anthropology, biology… One sheet of paper I turned over, had the title Bricolage and Crowdsourcing. Wow, I knew what crowdsourcing meant, but what about ‘bricolage’? According to Merriam-Webster’s, bricolage is defined as, “construction (as of a sculpture or a structure of ideas) achieved by using whatever comes to hand.” How serendipitous! Was this paper talking about LATTICE WORK? I couldn’t find a name on the paper, but how awesome would it have been to find this student and tell them what became of their discarded draft. [Note: if you are the author of that paper, please let us know!]

Over the span of 4 days, we saw almost 100 people making tetrahedrons! LW was located in CMKY headquarters, on the second floor of the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA). In such a highly trafficked location, most everyone who attended the festival saw LW when they came through headquarters to pick up event passes, wanted to check out the merchandise table, or talk with a CMKY staffer. We even had some museum visitors sit build tetrahedrons too! A sense of collective pride formed as people came back day after day to say hi, check on the progress and build more tetrahedrons. LATTICE WORK is such a feel good experience, bringing happiness, beauty and community to everyone whether they’re participating or enjoying the environment created.
